Henninge, Inc.

Paul Henninge was receiving so many recomendations outside of his day job at Product Genesis in Cambridge Mass, that he decided to begin consulting on his own in 1989. In 1990, he moved to Burlington.

"We help companies to create new products with our world class industrial design," says Henninge. Product designs range from a winter sports helmet for OVO USA to the elegant and functional sculpting of a toilet for American Standard.

Henninge, Inc. is an industrial design company that creates beautiful design solutions for clients who value innovation, substance and the creative process. Located in Burlington, the range and diversity of designs is truly impressive.

Take Aladdin Industries, for example. Aladdin Industries has produced lunch boxes since the 1950s, their marketing historically has revolved around the licensing of film and television characters to feature on their lunch boxes as a means of updating their product. But the lifestyle changes that took place in children's lives during the 1990s required Aladdin to seriously reevaluate this marketing strategy.

Aladdin came to Henninge, Inc., looking for direction on how to reinterpret their product for today's lifestyles. They chose Henninge because of our experience in sports-related youth culture with products such as Burton's Torque Binding, the Shockz inline skate, and the Business first baseless snowboard binding.

And then there's the diaper changing station. For over half a century, Avmor, Ltd., has been a leader in the commercial cleaning business. They are, in fact, one of the largest public-restroom suppliers in North America, producing hand dryers, soap dispensers, mopping equipment, and cleaning chemicals for commercial use.

When they came to Henninge in 1998, Avmor wanted to manufacture a baby-changing station to compete with the numerous other brands that had flooded the market in the early 1990s. The new product they wanted to develop needed to be inexpensive, strong, clean, attractive, and easy to use. It had to appeal to restaurant owners and their architects, who would make the purchase decision, and, yet, also work efficiently for the public.

The design would be sold worldwide and had to be appropriate for several international markets and adhere to all related regulatory requirements.

One very familiar Vermont brand with whom Henninge has worked is HearthStone Stoves. Like many business relationships, this one began with a small job. Initially Henninge was asked to design an attractive and comfortable door handle that would replace the existing tool-like handle, which was being used as a combination fire poker, ash-grate puller, and latch T-handle.

This feature was a functional hold-over from the back-to-the-land movement of the 1970s when the wood stove industry was revitalized after years of dormancy. During the 1980s the industry began to evolve. Decorative cast-iron products looking more like fine antique furniture than blocky functional furnaces began to appear. After all, many wood stoves are not used for heating year round, but are viewed as a secondary, decorative heat source. HearthStone needed beautiful furniture qualities added to their old line of wood stoves and wanted a new line of gas-burning cast iron stoves that incorporated similar aesthetic qualities.
